Xiaomi Redmi S2 in review: 16MP for selfies with Artificial Intelligence

Xiaomi continues to bring mobile phones to the market. If last week I was talking about the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5, today it's time to present his little brother, the Xiaomi Redmi S2. A very basic terminal, but with the quality that characterizes Xiaomi in its entry-level smartphones.

In today's review we talk about the Xiaomi Redmi S2, a 5.99-inch phone, with dual rear cameras and a powerful selfie lens. All this accompanied by a Snapdragon 625 and Android 8.1.

Xiaomi Redmi S2 in analysis: this is Xiaomi's most affordable mobile for 2018

From the outset, the first thing that strikes us about this Redmi S2 is that for an entry range it is not bad at all. It's kind of light version of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5, but it still has a good processor and more than acceptable RAM. Especially for the price that fits.

In addition, it equips the most recent version of Android, something that we do not see in the rest of the Chinese smartphones that are coming out this year. And that, as much as it hurts, is a detail that we must certainly value in favor of Xiaomi.

Design and display

The Xiaomi Redmi S2 has a 5.99 ”screen with HD + resolution (1440x720p) and a pixel density of 269ppi. On the back we find a metal casing where the fingerprint reader, the company logo and a double camera in a vertical arrangement have been located.

The terminal is available in gray, gold and rose gold colors. It has dimensions of 16.07 x 7.73 x 0.81 cm and a weight of 165 grams.

Power and performance

Inside the Redmi 2S we discovered quite interesting hardware. On the one hand, we find a processor Snapdragon 625 Octa Core 2.0GHz, Accompanied by 3GB RAM, Adreno 506 GPU and 32GB of internal storage expandable up to 256GB. As an operating system the mentioned Android Oreo.

As a novelty, the unlocking by facial recognition. A function that is becoming more and more popular, and that we are already beginning to see in the most recent mobiles that are on the market.

When it comes to performance, we are closer to a mid-range than an entry-level one. Here Xiaomi has chosen to sacrifice a bit of quality on the screen to deliver a much more consistent mobile in terms of power and manageability. All in order to keep the price as low as possible. His result in Antutu is 61,000 points.

Camera and battery

The camera is increasingly important to users, and Xiaomi is trying to become a benchmark in this regard. Their most recent mobiles prove it, and this Redmi S2 follows that same path.

On the one hand, we have a 12MP + 5MP dual rear camera with f / 2.2 aperture and 1,400 µm manufactured by Sony. A camera with HDR, Dual flash, autofocus and AI to improve the quality of the photos.

The selfie camera, meanwhile, saw a powerful 16MP lens that can apply blur thanks to the aforementioned artificial intelligence. One detail: the Redmi S series, takes its name from the "S" of selfies. It is clear then, that we are facing the most important feature of this mobile.

For autonomy, Xiaomi has opted for an integrated battery of 3080mAh with micro USB charging.

The phone has Bluetooth 4.1, dual SIM, and supports the following networks:

  • 2G: GSM B2, 3, 5, 8
  • 3G: WCDMA B1 / 2/5/8
  • 4G: TD-LTE B38 / 40
  • 4G: FDD-LTE B1 / 3/4/5/7/8/20

What do the specialized media think of the Xiaomi Redmi S2?

If we seek the opinion of the specialized press, we see that most offer a frankly positive view of this phone, highlighting its good value for money, and of course, its camera.

  • Engadget Android: «… A phone with adequate features for reasonable performance but that does not require a large investment. And as a key feature, the 16 megapixels that the manufacturer has placed on its screen.«
