Dragon Ball Super will end on March 25 with chapter 131. Now what? - The Happy Android

The last chapter of the "Arc of Universal Survival" will also be the last chapter of the animated series Dragon Ball Super. Episode 131 that will air on March 25, 2018 will serve as the final culmination, leaving the future of the franchise on television on the air - at least for now. From that date, the time slot in which Dragon Ball Super is broadcast (every Sunday at 9:00 a.m.) will be occupied by the anime GeGeGe no Kitarō.

The end of Dragon Ball Super has come to us from several fronts. On the one hand, the DVD number 11 of the series that was to compile episodes 121-133 has been adjusted to include only chapters 121-131 "Sign that there is nothing more to collect."

On the Daily Sports Online website they published last Friday the intention of Fuji TV to replace the Dragon Ball time slot with the new Kitaro series, indicating that the Dragon Ball broadcast was still under review.

The official Dragon Ball Super account on Twitter has also confirmed the end of the Universal Survival Arc, letting the end of the series read between the lines as such:

Thank you for always supporting us! The Dragon Ball Super’s Universe Survival Arc TV series finally reaches its climax at the end of March, so please support us until the end! There is also a movie this December! The Dragon Ball franchise will continue, keep an eye on it!

In a brief Rocket News 24 interview to Fuji TV –the channel that broadcasts Dragon Ball Super in Japan-, the bad news is confirmed, making it clear that the future of the Dragon Ball anime is “up in the air”:

Does Dragon Ball Super end?

Yes, the series that is currently airing will end here for now.

Really…? So it's not just about switching to another time slot?

Right now it is ending; what happens beyond is yet to be decided.

Does that mean the "survival arc of the universe" will end?

Correct. The "Universe Survival Arc" will conclude at the end of March.

Will there be a sequel?

It is currently undecided, so there is nothing I can tell you, but when something is decided, we will publish a press release.

The only thing we know for sure is that a new Dragon Ball movie will be released in December. Will it lead to a new animated series being released under a different name, just like the movie of the resurrection of Freeza did with DBS? For the moment, we will have to get used to the idea that, at least until december, there will be no new stories from the franchise to put in your mouth.

Many people are saying that this is nothing more than a hiatus or a stop. Developing a television series without original material on which to draw for its scripts and storyboards, as was the case with Toriyama's original manga, makes the episodes have to be done much more quickly. A hiatus in the broadcast of the series could serve so that Toyotaro manga caught up with and surpassed anime, thus allowing Toei to have material on which to draw. If that were the real cause of the hiatus - increasing the quality of the anime -, without a doubt, it would be more than justified.

Another interesting twist could be that they announce a new animated series, already under another name, airing in another time slot and targeting an older audience"This is already more of a personal wish than anything else." Something more like the original series, where people really hurt each other and bleed !! Has anyone seen a drop of blood in the 100+ episodes we have been through so far?

Anyway, leaving aside details like this, we can't ignore either the problems that Toriyama is having lately with hacienda, and who knows if in any way, this could affect in any way his contribution to the series. It is clear that nobody wants a new Dragon Ball GT, so the next few months could serve to clarify Toriyama's personal situation with the Treasury, and from there, resume his work at DB.

We must also remember that Dragon Ball is more current than ever, with the imminent launch of the video game Dragon Ball FIghterZ, a film that is causing a lot of expectation and an anime series that since its first broadcast has not dropped from the top 10 most watched anime in Japan. Will they be able to cancel the series without more and deny all the pasture that they are raising with the merchandising of Goku and company? I really doubt it.
