The Watchmen series premiered nearly a year ago on HBO, long before anti-racism protests filled the streets of America. However, after the scenes of police brutality highlighted in recent times, the show based on the characters created by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons more than 3 decades ago seems to be more current than ever.
For this reason, and coinciding with Freedom Day (June 19, Juneteenth) in North America, HBO has decided to “release” the 9 chapters that make up the series. Watchmen will be available free to everyone Without having to be subscribed to the platform, during this weekend (June 19, 20 and 21).
How to watch Watchmen for free on HBO
The miniseries is now accessible from the HBO.com website to be able to stream it, along with other free premium content within the “Celebrating Black Voices” initiative. We just have to click on the "Watch" button on the series file, enter a contact email along with our date of birth and start the playback. As simple as that!
It should be clarified that this offer is only available to those who reside in the United States, so in the rest of the countries we will have to use alternative routes. In Spain for example, HBO offers 2 weeks free subscription, time that we can take advantage of to see Watchmen and incidentally paste a good review of other series such as DEVS, What we do in the shadows or Curb Your Enthusiasm that are also worth it, and a lot.
What is the Watchmen series about?
Although expectations were moderate (remember that it is a sequel that is not based on any previous comic) the series has received unanimous applause from the critics, becoming one of the best productions of 2019.
"Watchmen begins in Tulsa, during 1921, and explores the legacy of systemic racism in the United States" they mention from HBO. Although the series is continually making flashbacks and time jumps in the narrative, the main story takes place in the present, where we can see how the original characters of the comic have evolved, such as Ozymandias, Doctor Manhattan and Silk Wraith.
The story developed by Damon Lindelof for HBO is also joined by other original characters created expressly for the series, such as the vigilante Sister Night and her partner Looking Glass, who will fight to discover the truth behind the group of white supremacists the Seventh Kaballería. What happened to Ozymandias after the events of the late 1980s? Where is Doctor Manhattan? The story explores all these unknowns and many others in a narrative that shines with its own light in chapters such as "A God Walks into Abar" or the closing of the series itself. A more than satisfactory conclusion, with a very well spun ending that nevertheless leaves a small door open for a possible second season.
