Xiaomi Mi A2 in analysis, a Mi A1 with better cameras and more CPU

The successor to the Xiaomi Mi A1 has just seen the light. This time, the Asian giant has decided to put on sale several models of the new Xiaomi Mi A2. On the one hand, we have the Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite, a lighter version with a lower CPU and more humble cameras (but with notch and much more battery). On the other, the standard Mi A2 version that comes in 3 variants of 32GB, 64GB and 128GB of storage.

In today's review we talk about the new Xiaomi Mi A2 Xiaomi's latest proposal for the premium mid-range. (Note: The version Lite, being a model with many differences with respect to the standard M2, we will dedicate a separate review)

Xiaomi Mi A2 in analysis, the natural evolution of the Xiaomi Mi A1 bets on the 20MP in the front and rear camera

The first Xiaomi Mi A1 when introducing Android One for the first time on a Xiaomi device, it was the big news and it attracted a lot of attention last year.

One of the virtues of the A1 most highlighted by users was the good camera that it mounted considering that it was not a high-end, so, ¿why not focus on the photographic section for the next model? If it is that, these Xiaomi do not miss a ...

Design and display

The Xiaomi Mi A2 has a 5.99-inch screen with Full HD + resolution (2160x1080p) and a pixel density of 427 ppi. In this sense, we see that the screen takes up more space than that of the A1, there are fewer frames, and it has also gained in definition, which is not bad at all.

At the design level there are not many changes. We continue to have a sober, slim and elegant terminal. The fingerprint detector remains at the rear, and what does change is the location of the camera, going from horizontal to a vertical formation with the flash between the 2 lenses.

The Xiaomi Mi A2 has dimensions of 15.80 x 7.54 x 0.73 cm, a weight of 168 grams and is available in black, gold and denim blue colors.

Power and performance

The Mi A2 mounts more than satisfactory hardware for what we can expect from a premium mid-range. In the machine center we find an SoC Snapdragon 660 Octa Core running at 2.2GHz, 4GB of RAM and 36GB / 64GB / 128GB of internal storage space (without the possibility of SD, yes). The operating system in this case is the latest Android 8.1 Oreo -Which implies that we also have facial recognition unlocking-.

At the performance level, although at first glance it may not seem like it, it supposes quite an important leap compared to the processor of the Xiaomi Mi A1 (remember, it has not been on the market for a year). To get an idea, let's see what Antutu's benchmarking tool says:

  • Result in Antutu of the Xiaomi Mi A1: 78,150 points.
  • Result in Antutu of the Xiaomi Mi A2: 134,292 points.

Almost double. In other words, the processor still belongs to the Snapdragon 600 range: we went from a Snapdragon 625 to a Snapdragon 660. OK. Of course, the jump in pure and hard power is undeniable. In short, a very succulent performance (although later we only use the mobile to watch videos and chat, but that is another story ...).

Camera and battery

This is one of the star factors of the Xiaomi Mi A2, its cameras. The idea is to make a difference, and the truth is that we will not find many mobiles for this price that can make it a bit competitive.

For the selfie zone, Xiaomi has opted for one 20MP large pixel 2μm lens made by Sony (IMX376) with AI for portrait mode (AI Intelligent Beauty 4.0).

The rear camera is made up of 2 lenses: 12MP + 20MP with f / 1.75 aperture manufactured by Sony (IMX486 Exmor RS) with a pixel size of 1,250 µm, Dual LED flash and autofocus. A camera that promises better results in night environments (low lighting has always been the great enemy of cameras in the mid-range).

Finally, we talk about the battery of this little gem. A pile of 3010mAh with fast charging via USB type C. A battery that, although it seems somewhat scarce, I can assure you that it offers good autonomy (I have the Xiaomi Mi A1 at home, with an almost identical battery, and it lasts more than a day quietly).

Connectivity

The Mi A2 has dual nano SIM, maintains the 3.5mm jack port, has Bluetooth 5.0, WiFi AC and LTE connectivity.

Price and availability

The Xiaomi Mi A2 is already in the pre-sale phase at a price that varies between 223 euros ($ 259.99 to change) for the 32GB model, and 292 euros ($ 339.99) in the case of the most powerful model with 128GB of space.

The terminals will start shipping from July 31, so it is possible that once the pre-sale is over, their price will increase by a few euros.

In short, the Xiaomi Mi A2 is a logical evolution of the A1, in which better cameras and a reasonable increase in performance have been implemented. If we are photography lovers and we are looking for a premium quality mid-range with a good finish, this is a more than interesting alternative.
