Samsung Galaxy J5 (2017) in review, Samsung's new mid-range

All smartphones that carry the Galaxy label are synonymous with million-dollar sales. Such is the case of Samsung Galaxy J5 (2017), the bet of the South Korean company for the most accessible mid-range. Not everything is going to be high-end premium terminals like the Galaxy S8 and company ... The key question is: is it really worth it?

Analysis of the Samsung Galaxy J5 (2017), 2GB of RAM and Exynos 7870 Octa Core, with metal finish

The Samsung Galaxy J5 of 2017 must be seen for what it is, an alternative at a good price for those who sympathize with the brand and the quality of their smartphones, but who cannot afford to leave the millionaire father in the latest flagship of the moment.

Comparing it with other similarly priced mid-range terminals it may not be as complete or as powerful, but it is undoubtedly a terminal that is going to give a lot of war in the coming months.

Design and display

This Samsung Galaxy J5 (2017) has a screen 5.2 ”HD Super AMOLED with a pixel density of 282ppp. A 468 nit display that looks especially good indoors, with a wide color gamut and brightness.

At the design level we find the unmistakable stamp of all Samsung terminals. Physical Home button on the front –with fingerprint reader function- with a haptic button on each side and the camera in the upper area. The casing, on the other hand, changed from polycarbonate to a new smooth metallic cut that promises to offer a very good grip. An elegant phone with a great finish, how could it be otherwise.

Power and performance

When it comes to talking about performance, things already change a bit. On the one hand, we have a processor Eight-core Exynos 7870 running at 1.6GHz, with 2GB of RAM, Mali T-830 MP1 GPU and 16GB of internal storage space expandable by SD card. All this, under the baton of Android 7.1.

To give us an idea, the Exynos 7870 is a mid-range processor that is designed to compete with the Snapdragon 625. In that regard there is not much to object, and it fits perfectly with what we can expect from a good mid-range. The storage space can also be expanded with an SD, but the RAM memory certainly seems a bit short for a 200-euro smartphone.

To navigate, chat and others we will not have problems, but if we try to install really heavy apps or a little powerful games we may notice certain deficiencies at the performance level. Has an Antutu score of 45,710, and among other interesting functions, it has the service of Samsung Cloud to make backup copies of our data, and Secure Folder (secure folder) to encrypt files and folders.

Camera and battery

Regarding the camera, the Galaxy J5 (2017) has a 13.0MP rear lens with f / 1.7 aperture, autofocus and LED flash. In the selfie area, he does not fall short and delivers a 13.0MP front camera with f / 1.9 aperture. In general, it is a camera that takes very good photos, but like most mid-range smartphones, it suffers in low-light environments.

For power Samsung has opted for a 3000mAh battery with fast charging. It is a phone that has a low-power processor and a relatively small screen if we compare it with most smartphones today (almost all of 5.5 ”upwards).

For practical purposes, this means greater autonomy, which translates into about 6 hours of active screen and, ultimately, an acceptable duration that will hardly leave us stranded in the middle of the day.

Other functionalities

Another of the highlights that we cannot ignore are the speakers of the Samsung Galaxy J5 (2017). Or rather the speaker. The J5's sound has garnered rave reviews for its high quality, with good bass and treble, and an equalizer worth its weight in gold. Good audio, both through speaker and headphones.

Finally, indicate that it is a telephone that has a slot for Dual sim (nano + nano), LTE, WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC and FM radio. It has dimensions of 146.2 × 71.3 × 7.9mm and a weight of 160 grams.

Price and availability

The Samsung Galaxy J5 (2017) went on sale at a price of about 230 euros, but it is already available for just over 200 euro, about $ 240 to change, on Amazon.

Broadly speaking, we find a balanced phone, without too much chicha but consistent, with a good battery, a decent camera and some useful functions such as NFC to make purchases directly with the mobile.

If we are looking for a more powerful mid-range for the same price we can always turn to brands such as Vernee, UMIDIGI, Xiaomi and so many others. Meanwhile, the ideal phone for Samsung lovers fleeing the outrageous prices of their flagship killers.
