Free and unlimited VPN with the Turbo VPN app - The Happy Android

VPN connections help us maintain privacy and anonymity when browsing the Internet. A most necessary tool if we do not want the websites that we visit to track our location, or that our ISP (Internet provider) can know our habits on the network.

Here on the blog in recent times we have talked about a few free VPN services, like the one from Windscribe (my favorite so far) or the one offered by the well-known Opera browser for Android for a few months. Today we bring a new alternative called Turbo VPN that presents a very interesting set of functionalities and is also free. Let's see what it is!

Turbo VPN: a virtual private network for Android, free and with 8 locations to choose from

How Turbo VPN works is pretty straightforward. We install the application on our Android, accept the terms of service (we'll talk about that a little later) and we will automatically be directed to the main panel of the app.

Here we will find 2 buttons:

  • World globe: Located in the upper right margin, by clicking on this icon we will access the list of servers. Currently there are 8 different countries available that we can use for free: Netherlands, United Kingdom, USA (New York), USA (San Francisco), Canada, Germany, India and Singapore.
  • Carrot: This orange button is the one that we must press whenever we want to activate or deactivate the VPN connection of our device.

If we display the left side menu of Turbo VPN we will also see a few interesting settings. From the option "Apps Using VPN" we will can filter apps and choose which applications connect using the VPN and which ones don't. Something that can be great if we want to make an exception when using this service.

In the panel of "Settings”We will also have the possibility to choose the type of connection (OpenVPN or IPSec) and if we want it to connect automatically whenever the application is started.

It is also worth mentioning that if we like the service a lot and want to go to the premium plan (subscription of € 3.17 / month), some thirty additional servers from countries such as Japan, Spain, Russia, Taiwan or Hong Kong will also be added.

Use experience

After installing and testing the free Turbo VPN servers we have been able to get a couple of things clear. On the one hand, that connection speed is really good, with times of page load and multimedia reproduction in which no type of slowdown is noticed. It seems that VIP servers are even faster, so Turbo VPN is highly recommended in that regard.

Where we have found more problems has been when it comes to watching streaming content, since in the case of Netflix, for example, it detects that we are using a VPN and does not let us play. In other services such as Prime Video we have also found some other limitation in this regard. This is because streaming platforms now have many more controls to avoid this type of activity, and if we try with another VPN client we will see that the limitation is the same. In any case, it is a fact to take into account.

Privacy Policy

The servers and infrastructure necessary to offer a VPN service have a fairly high cost, and as in almost all applications on the market, when something is free, you know: the price to pay is us. In the case of Turbo VPN, the free version is maintained thanks to the advertisements that we will see within the app. However, if we review their privacy policy (yes, we have read it) we will see that they also collect certain user data:

  • The name and version of the applications that we have activated.
  • Information about the quality of the VPN connection.
  • The amount of MB transferred.
  • Application usage statistics.

Likewise, its privacy policy also clarifies that our outgoing IP is not recorded, nor the pages we visit, nor our connection hours or the IP we have before connecting to the VPN. In short, it seems that the data they collect is purely analytical and anonymous. I'm still not very clear about why they need to know what other applications I have installed on my mobile (according to the developer it is to avoid and diagnose technical problems), but I suppose I can live with this small “payment” in exchange for a good VPN connection.

Otherwise, VPN Turbo is one of the most popular app on Google Play, with more than 100 million downloads and a simply overwhelming 4.6-star rating. Personally, it is not an application that I would use constantly, but it can be a good solution for specific needs and connections in certain environments.
