After the virtual presentation event was canceled on June 3 due to the racial justice protests that are taking place in the US, June 10 was the date chosen to announce the launch of the first official beta of Android 11, thus giving the starting gun for the new version of Google's operating system.
If we are interested in taking a look and testing this first version of Android 11 we are in luck, since the beta has been made public and can now be downloaded and installed on any compatible device. If you have a Pixel 2 or higher smartphone, the installation process is really simple. Let's go there!
Compatible Devices
As we discussed, at the time of writing these lines the Android 11 beta is only compatible with Pixel devices manufactured by Google itself. If we have a device from any other brand for now, we have no choice but to arm ourselves with patience and wait a bit. In any case, it is very likely that, as has happened on previous occasions, Google will expand the list by adding more compatible devices as the days go by.
For now, these are all the devices on which the Android 11 beta can be installed.
- Pixel 2
- Pixel 2 XL
- Pixel 3
- Pixel 3 XL
- Pixel 3A
- Pixel 3A XL
- Pixel 4
- Pixel 4 XL
How to install the Android 11 beta
Assuming that we have any of these terminals in our possession, downloading and installing the beta is really simple. You do not have to connect your mobile phone to your PC or carry out any kind of dark ritual that involves praying to long-forgotten atavistic ancestral gods. Just follow these steps.
- Enter the Android 11 beta section within the Android Developers websiteand click on «Get the beta«.
- Log in to the page using the same Google account that you have configured on the mobile where you want to install the beta.
- Below you should see a list of all the devices you have that are compatible with the Android 11 beta.
- Select the device where you want to install the new beta by clicking on the "Participate" button.
- Accept the terms and conditions of the service and click on “Join the beta program”.
- On your phone, open the Settings menu and navigate to “System -> Advanced -> System Update -> Check for Updates”.
- The update may take up to 24 hours to reach your mobile. If you don't see it yet, try again in a bit.
If you want to stop participating in the beta, you can return to the Android beta program website and unsubscribe. Of course, keep in mind that if you do this you will have to download a new update for your device, which will basically involve doing a factory wipe to the terminal and clear all local data to go back to the previous version of Android. In this case make sure to make a backup of all important data.
