Redmi Note 8 Pro in review, a mid-range with gaming aspirations

In a few years Xiaomi has managed to establish itself as one of the best alternatives among mid-range smartphones. Its terminals are always characterized by offering good features at an affordable price, and that in the mid-range - where practically all mobile phones falter somewhere - is like playing poker with marked cards: whatever happens, usually almost always you win.

In today's review we look at the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro, a mobile that came on the market about 5 months ago, and that today has become one of the most desired mobile phones by Android users. A good sign of this is that it has been one of the best-selling phones on Amazon for a long time. Let's see where its magic lies.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro, an elegant terminal with liquid cooling, 6GB of RAM and quad camera

The Note 8 Pro is a smartphone that, like most Xiaomi phones, knows how to sell itself as something different. In this case, the company presents it to us as an ideal phone for gamers, with a cooling system, lots of RAM, battery and a surprisingly powerful 64MP camera.

Design and display

The Redmi Note 8 Pro mounts an IPS screen with Full HD + resolution and a size of 6.53 " with a pixel density of 396ppi. A screen crowned by the classic notch at the top that gives us a touch surface of 84%. If we look exclusively at the design, we see that the manufacturer has opted for a crystallized casing, which although it is still a delight to the eye, is a magnet for fingerprint marks.

In any case, we are facing a smartphone with a considerable weight, almost 200 grams (something to be expected considering the large battery that it fits). For the rest, it is interesting to mention that it has both Corning Gorilla Glass for blows and IP52 certification against dust and water. We will notice it when we carry it in our pocket, but at least we will know that it is well protected.

Power and performance

Hardware has been one of the aspects that has raised the most controversy. Xiaomi, accustomed to using Snapdragon processors in its mid-range terminals, has opted this time for a Mediatek chip, the Helio G90T. An SoC that, however, offers the most remarkable performance with its 8 cores running at 2.05GHz, a Mali-G76 graphics at 800MHz, 6GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage space.

The decision to have chosen this chip resides precisely in the possibility that the Helio G90T offers to use a liquid cooling system, which allows several hours of play with the mobile without overheating. To give us an idea of its power, the Redmi Note 8 Pro has a score of about 280,000 points in the Antutu benchmarking tool.

The operating system, for its part, uses Xiaomi's MIUI11 customization layer, which is mounted on Android 9.0. This may throw back those who do not want to use the typical applications that come from the base in this layer, but the truth is that it offers good fluidity when handling the mobile.

Camera and battery

We go with another of the strengths of the Note 8 Pro, the photographic section. On the one hand, the device mounts a 20MP selfie camera with f / 2.0 apertureas well as a rear quad camera with a main sensor of 64MP and aperture f / 1.9. This sensor is accompanied by 3 other lenses, each with a specific function.

  • An 8MP 120 degree wide angle lens for panoramic photos.
  • A 2MP macro sensor to take pictures at a very close distance from the lens (2cm).
  • And finally, a 2MP depth sensor to optimize portrait mode.

The truth is that it is a very balanced camera that offers a great level of detail, and that stands out for its good results in night environments or in low light. Its macro mode and panoramic mode have also received criticism, but this does not prevent the camera from being one of the most striking aspects of this terminal.

Regarding the battery, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro has a battery of 4,500mAh with 18W fast charge (100% in an hour and a half) via USB type C, and an autonomy that in normal situations can last about 2 days.

It also has an NFC connection, 3.5mm headphone jack, Bluetooth 5.0, WiFi AC and an infrared sensor.

Price and availability

At the time of writing this review the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro has an approximate price of 208.89 euros on sites like Amazon. A 128GB version is also available for about 258 euros.

In short, a perfect mobile for those who are looking for a powerful mobile that does not heat up when we put a bit of a whip, with a good battery and a camera loaded with megapixels that also takes some of the most successful photos at night. On the negative aspects, we have a mobile with a weight above average, nice, but a bit slippery and with a tendency to leave fingerprints on its rear glass. In any case, a very sweet device if what we want is a mobile with muscle that offers good value for money.
