Opera recently announced that make free VPN available in your browser again. This is great news, since it was a service that was launched in 2016 and that for reasons that are not relevant, it stopped offering back in 2018. Fortunately, it is back, both in its desktop version and for users of It operates on Android and iOS.
In today's post we will see how to properly enable and configure Opera's built-in VPN on Android to browse privately and without restrictions. If you have not yet tried this excellent browser, pay attention, because this may be a good time to jump on the bandwagon. Let's go there!
How to correctly activate and configure Opera VPN on an Android mobile
The first thing we have to say is that the activation and use of the VPN in Opera is not very intuitive. It's easy to use if we know where to go and check a few things. But let's go by parts ...
Install the latest version of Opera
The free VPN service has only been on the market for a few days. It is available as of update 51, version that we can get directly from the Google Play store.

Opera version 51 is also available in APK format through secure sites like APK Mirror.
How to activate VPN browsing
The Opera browser allows us to log in to synchronize our history and other browsing data between devices. Luckily, no account is required to use the VPN and it is totally free with no bandwidth limit.
The only downside is that it is not activated as standard, so we will have to do it by hand by ourselves. The good news is that it won't take us more than half a minute.
- We open Opera, click on the "O" icon in the lower right margin and select "Setting”.
- In the configuration menu, we activate the tab "VPN”.
When enabling the VPN we will see how a notification appears warning that this will prevent activating the data saving mode. Therefore, if at any given time we want to save data when browsing, we will have no choice but to deactivate the private browsing service.
In any case, the ad blocking continues to work with the VPN activated, so at least in that aspect we will continue to be well protected and load the pages a little faster.
How to configure the VPN correctly
If we try to access a YouTube video restricted in our country or load a page blocked by geolocation, we will see that the VPN still does not work. What is happening?
The point is that the default VPN is only activated when we surf incognito. That is, when we use the private tab.
To access the Opera VPN configuration settings first we have to open a private tab (from the tab menu in the lower bar) and click on the button "Setting”.
From here we can handle several aspects:
- Use the VPN for private tabs only: If we uncheck this box we will be able to use the VPN in the "standard" tabs, without having to enter incognito mode.
- Virtual location: By default it is marked as “Optimal”. We can change it and choose the location of our server: America, Asia or Europe.
- Bypass VPN for searches: The browser allows search engines to detect our region to offer more relevant results.
Therefore, if we want to use the VPN without taking so many detours, we only have to deactivate the "Use the VPN for private tabs only”And navigate normally. It is the most comfortable if we want to protect all the traffic that we generate through the browser.
If we try again, we will see that now we can access content that we had previously blocked without problems. Something that can come in handy if we are on vacation or traveling in another country.
Mention that we will know that we are browsing the VPN because an icon will appear in the navigation bar, as we see in the image above. If we click on it, we will see an estimate of the data consumed, as well as an activation / deactivation button and settings.
As I said at the beginning, it is not a very intuitive formula but we hope that Opera will redesign and facilitate the interface in future updates.
What are the advantages of using Opera's VPN service?
If we are still not sure why we need a VPN connection, it would be advisable to assess what this entails.
VPN connections allow us to increase security and privacy when we connect to the Internet. Thus, when we activate Opera's native VPN, it creates a private and encrypted connection between our mobile and a remote VPN server. All this using a 256-bit encryption algorithm.
When we activate this service, the VPN hides our physical location, making it more difficult to track our activity on the Internet. In addition, it is a service without logs, which means that the server does not retain any record of our activity.
In short, a really useful tool, especially if we connect to public WiFi networks where data traffic is much less controlled.
Are there other alternatives for private browsing on Android?
If with this proposal we do not have enough, and we want to choose which servers to connect to or obtain greater coverage, there are other alternatives.
There we have other quality services such as TunnelBear or NordVPN. Both services are paid, but in the case of TunnelBear there is a free 1GB plan. You can see a little more in detail how these platforms work in the following POST.
