VPN connections not only serve to "camouflage" our IP address assigning us an address belonging to another country or location, allowing us to access resources or pages inaccessible from our country of origin. VPN technology (Virtual Private Network) It's much more than that, and it is mainly used in business environments where it is necessary to establish a common network to access the same shared resources from different physical locations. This allows multiple offices / branch offices and even mobile agent devices to be connected virtually, using only one Internet connection.
OpenVPN is a VPN solution that uses the SSL / TLS standards to encrypt the data exchange and includes several features that give it a high level of security, supporting extensive configuration options, all under free software GPL license.

- An OpenVPN profile.
- A server to connect to (the server data comes in the configuration file).
The OpenVPN profile is saved in a file with the extension .ovpn. Therefore, the first step will be export the .ovpn configuration file to our Android device. If we do not have the aforementioned file, we must request it from the network administrator.
If we have no choice but to create the file ourselves, we can use the following template as a base, or consult the following forum where we will find several indications that can help us create the aforementioned file.
Important: bear in mind that together with the .ovpn file, we must have the security and encryption certificates (.ca, .crt, .key) located in the same folder of the terminal.
To load the .ovpn file we go to "Menu -> Import -> Import Profile from SD card ” and we select the .ovpn file that we just copied.
Other methods to import an .ovpn profile:
- If we have an account in a OpenVPN Access Server, we can import the file directly from the Access Server. For this we are going to "Menu -> Import -> Import Access Server Profile”.
- If we have an account in a private tunnel service (Private Tunnel) we can import the profile from "Menu -> Import -> Import Private Tunnel Profile ”).
Once the OpenVPN profile is imported, we will see a message on the screen indicating “Profile successfully imported”.
Next we select the server we want to connect to (if there is only one we leave it as is) and we enter our username and password to network. Click on "Connect”.
Then a message will appear requesting a security certificate. If our connection does not require any certificate, simply click on "Continue”.
Established connection! If everything has gone well we will see a message with the status and information of the connection.
At the moment that we want to disconnect from the VPN we just have to click on "Disconnect”.
If we have questions or problems when establishing and configuring the connection We can go to the following link on the official OpenVPN website with useful information and FAQs about OpenVPN connections on Android.
