How to automatically translate your WhatsApp and Telegram messages

Language is often a major barrier in establishing successful communication. As much as you think you speak intermediate level English, have studied at the University of Aravaca or think that you defend yourself quite well in French, reality is often relentless in many cases. Therefore, when we speak with friends, foreign lovers or colleagues from the other side of the world through messaging apps, expressing yourself correctly can be a challenge.

Therefore, in today's tutorial we are going to explain a little trick to translate all those messages in real time automatically when we are chatting in applications like Telegram, WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger.

How to translate messages automatically in Telegram, WhatsApp and other instant messaging apps

As you may have already guessed, neither WhatsApp nor Telegram have added any native function to translate texts, and of course we are not going to recommend any third-party app that is responsible for doing the dirty work. Instead we are going to use GBoard, the Google keyboard that is installed as standard in most Android terminals.

The steps to follow are really simple, and as you will see they allow enough fluency to hold a conversation quite comfortably. Let's go there!

  • We open Telegram, WhatsApp or the messaging app that we are going to use to chat.
  • Click on the text box where we are going to send the message.
  • When the Google keyboard opens, instead of typing, click on the 3 dot icon that appears in the upper right corner of the keyboard.
  • Among all the available options, we select “Translate”.
  • This will open a new text bar where we will write the message we want to send. The keyboard will automatically translate this text and place it in the send bar of the chat.
  • Important: Remember to select the input and output language before starting to write.
  • Finally, when we have everything ready, click on the send button, and that's it!

In the same way, we can also use the keyboard to translate the messages we receive, although in that case the management is much less agile. In addition, we will have to be careful to change the source language to the target language. Do not forget about this detail.

For the rest, as you can see, it is a rather silly trick but one of the most practical to make us understand without putting the claw when communicating with people who do not speak our mother tongue. Especially to use expressions that we do not master too much or set phrases that are generally the ones that cost the most, since they are not translated literally in other languages.
