Xiaomi Redmi 6 in analysis, the dual camera with AI arrives at the base range

Xiaomi does not stop bringing new terminals to the market in a really prolific way. Today we have to talk about Xiaomi Redmi 6, the bet of the Asian company for the most affordable mid-range range. Attention, this is not a groundbreaking smartphone, but if we are looking for something simple with a couple of interesting details it is very possible that this terminal meets our expectations.

In today's review we talk about the Xiaomi Redmi 6, the most recent model in the Redmi line. What are the news? The dual rear camera with AI, a really compact size and a SoC that makes the leap from Qualcomm chips to Mediatek's Helio P22.

Xiaomi Redmi 6 in analysis, a photography-oriented mid-range

The last Redmi that we discussed in these parts was the Redmi 5 Plus, a very attractive phone that had some shortcomings -such as the double camera-, but that was quite liked thanks to that large screen and a more than acceptable battery. Is the Redmi 6 up to the task?

Design and display

The Xiaomi Redmi 6 has a 5.45-inch screen with HD resolution (1440 x 720p) and a pixel density of 295ppi. The physical buttons disappear to gain more screen space, and the fingerprint reader is conveniently located on the back, how could it be otherwise.

The casing has a finish called (by the company itself) "small waist of willow Yang”Which helps to achieve a particularly pleasant sensation to the touch, especially considering that it is made of plastic.

The device has dimensions of 14.75 x 7.15 x 0.83 cm, a weight of 146 grams and is available in black, gold, blue and pink.

The truth would not have been bad a little more resolution on the screen, but at least we have a compact and really light mobile, which is something that is appreciated when we look for a terminal of just over 100 euros.

Power and performance

At the hardware level, the outlook is quite optimistic. On the one hand, we have a 12nm processor Helio P22 Octa Core at 2.0GHz with 4GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage space expandable up to 256GB via SD. All with Android 8.1 Oreo and MIUI 9.6 customization layer.

A lighter version is also available with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal space.

At the performance level, we are facing a terminal that is up to scratch. This translates into a result in Antutu of 75,399 points. A practically identical score to that achieved by the previous Redmi 5 Plus with its Snapdragon 625.

That is, we are facing a terminal that is closer to the mid-range than to the low, being more than efficient for browsing, day-to-day tasks and practically any application that does not require a very marked graphic load (for AAA games we will have than to spend a little more money).

Camera and battery

The camera is undoubtedly the strong point of the Redmi 6. Mount a 12MP + 5MP dual rear lens with f / 2.2 aperture manufactured by Sony (IMX468). In addition, it has artificial intelligence for photos, which allows the camera to identify everyday objects in order to improve the shot. The selfie camera, as in previous models of the Redmi line, stays at 5MP, but with portrait mode and AI blur.

The battery for its part equips a 3000mAh battery with fast charging by micro USB. It's not a very large battery, but it should be more than enough to get you through the day in most situations. The good thing is that thanks to the fast charge we can have the smartphone 100% in a really short period of time.

Other functionalities

The Xiaomi Redmi 6 has unlocking through facial recognition, Bluetooth 4.2, dual nano SIM and positioning by GPS, A-GPS, Glonass and Beidou.

Price and availability

The Xiaomi Redmi 6 is now available in the pre-sale phase on sites such as Amazon and GearBest at a price that is between the 125 euros - about $ 145 - for the 3GB + 32GB version, and the 165 euros for the 4GB + 64GB version. The pre-sale will end the first weekend of October (days 1 and 2), so it is likely that from that date its price will rise slightly.

In general, we are facing an access terminal (screen and housing), but with somewhat more powerful hardware than normal. It can be a very good device for those looking for something really cheap, but with consistent hardware. If we have a little more money, maybe it will be more convenient for us to take a look at the Xiaomi Mi A2 -or even the Mi A1, which is now great in price-, but if we move in the line of 125-150 euros, the Redmi 6 is an alternative that will satisfy a large number of users.
