Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus in analysis, a mobile with a large screen and a large battery

The Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus, also known as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 in its Asian version, is the new mid-range of the company for this 2018. The heir to the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 arrives to meet the needs of those who are looking for a good performance terminal, with a big screen and a bomb-proof battery.

In today's review we analyze the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus, a mobile phone that will shake more than one competitor of the Chinese manufacturer. Above all, those who offer large smartphones for a price of no more than € 200. What does the new Redmi 5 Plus offer?

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus in analysis, the mid-range with a large screen and powerful battery that many were waiting for

The new Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus has some not too revolutionary characteristics, especially considering that not a year ago the other great Xiaomi mid-range, the Mi A1, was released.

Nevertheless, the Redmi 5 Plus comes to please those looking for a larger panel, with an aesthetic better adapted to the times and a battery light years away from the great Xiaomi Mi A1.

Design and display

In terms of design, the changes are substantial compared to the previous Xiaomi Redmi Note 4. We have a larger smartphone, with a larger screen, which, without eliminating the phone's frames, makes much more use of its surface.

To do this, it has gotten rid of the classic physical button on the front to leave as much space as possible for the screen. A screen that happens to offer an aspect ratio of 18: 9 with excellent Full HD + resolution 2160x1080p, with a pixel density of 403ppi and brightness of 450 nits.

A screen with rounded edges and arched 2.5D surrounded by a metallic casing on the back, where we find the classic fingerprint reader, just below the camera.

The Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus has dimensions of 15.85 x 7.54 x 0.80 cm, a weight of 180 grams and is available in black, blue and gold. A terminal of forceful dimensions and weight, without touching the excess, in just the right measure.

Power and performance

When it comes to getting into the guts of the Redmi 5 Plus, we find characteristics very similar to those we can see in the aforementioned Xiaomi Mi A1. On the one hand, we have a processor Snapdragon 625 Octa Core 2.0GHz accompanied by a GPU Adreno 506, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage expandable up to 128GB by card. If something works, why change it?

In the software section, the terminal uses a version of Android 7.1 customized with Xiaomi MIUI 9 layer. A layer of software that incorporates some interesting functionalities such as the Mi File Manager, Mi Remote to take advantage of the infrared function of the terminal and control the TV, and the always appreciated FM Radio.

In general, it is a mid-range phone that performs really well in terms of performance and fluidity, offering interesting results even in some games with a large graphic load.

To give us an idea, this terminal has an Antutu score of 77,221, and a benchmarking of 864 (single) / 4,239 (multi) on Geekbench. A very good score in itself, but even better if we compare it with other phones such as the Xiaomi Mi A1 (61,454 in Antutu), the Huawei P Smart (65,935 in Antutu) or the BQ Aquaris X (60,123 in Antutu).

Camera and battery

The Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus camera is committed to simplicity. There is no dual camera on the rear, but at least you saw a 12MP lens with f / 2.2 aperture and 1.25μm pixels. A good camera that also includes night mode, phase detection focus, and that ultimately gives more than satisfactory results. On the front, however, we find only a compliant 5.0MP lens. Enough for a few selfies, but lower quality than the rear lens.

The battery for its part is one of the strengths of this terminal. A 4000mAh battery with micro USB charging It offers an autonomy of 2 days, thanks to both its capacity and the low-consumption chip from Qualcomm. It does not have fast charging, but at least its duration is notably prolonged in time, well above the average.

Price and availability

Currently the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus is priced at $ 199.99, about € 165 to change, on GearBest. It is also available in Amazon.co.uk for a price that at the beginning of March 2018 is around 200 euros.

In other trusted sites, such as AliExpress, we can also get a lighter version of 3GB RAM + 32GB ROM for an approximate price of 136 euros.

A terminal with a succulent value for money, which undoubtedly delivers a quality product for the price you ask for.

The Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus is the ideal terminal for those who like the Xiaomi Mi A1 but want a larger screen and a longer lasting battery. In return, we have a slightly heavier terminal, but with a more stylized appearance, and a much more adjusted price.

For the rest, an ideal phone for browsing, chatting, with enough space to store photos and a performance that will even allow us to indulge ourselves with some more powerful app or game than normal.
