Samsung Galaxy Tab A (2018) in review, a 10 ”tablet with Snapdragon 450, 3GB RAM and a good battery

The first thing we have to take into account when facing the Galaxy Tab A is that we are facing a low-mid-range tablet. It has very good materials and finishes, but its hardware is designed to offer moderate performance. Therefore, it is oriented more to occasional users (browsing, watching movies, etc.) than to real users. hardcore gamers who seek to make the most of this type of apparatus.

Design and display

The Galaxy Tab A (2018) equips a 10.5-inch screen with Full HD resolution (1920 x 1200p) with a pixel density of 216ppi. It has a black housing and frames –also available in gray-, with an elegant design and 4 Dolby Atmos speakers with 3D surround sound that improve the sound experience of previous models.

The screen has Daily Board function that allows you to display photos while the battery is charging. In addition, it has a micro SD card slot, 3.5mm headphone jack and charging via USB type C port.

Finally, comment that it has dimensions of 260.0 x 161.1 x 8.0 mm and a weight of 529 grams.

Power and performance

If we go into the guts of the Tab A of 2018 we find a chip Snapdragon 450 Octa Core running at 1.8GHz, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage expandable up to 400GB via SD. The operating system is the latest Android 8.1 Oreo.

It is a more powerful set than in previous editions, which does not mean that it is quite modest hardware. To give us an idea, this translates into a benchmarking result in Antutu of 57,000 points.

That does not mean that the system works smoothly, allows you to view multimedia content at a very good level and install and run apps without problem. Of course, if we are looking for a tablet with which to edit videos or use heavy Photoshop-type programs, we will surely get a pretty big disappointment.

For the rest, as far as software is concerned, it offers a multi-account mode with which we can create up to 8 different users, and Samsung Kids to filter access to content in children's users.

Camera and battery

The camera of this Samsung Galaxy Tab A (2018), without being as good as that of a smartphone in conditions, the truth is that it is of much better quality than what we can find in most current tablets. On the one hand, we have an 8MP rear camera with f / 1.9 aperture, flash and autofocus, and another 5MP selfie camera on the front. Not bad.

The battery for its part is one of the strengths of this Android tablet. Equip a 7,300mAh battery with fast charging and compatible with POGO charging docks. Full charge in about 3 hours and duration of 15 hours in continuous video playback. In short, the same powerful battery from previous models: if it works, why change?

Other functionalities

Opinion: Is it worth buying a Samsung Galaxy Tab A (2018)?

The Galaxy Tab A from 2018 is a good tablet. It has improved some aspects over the previous model, such as a greater amount of RAM and a slightly higher processor. Its large screen, without being especially surprising, is a good panel to watch videos, series and others, with a very good quality level and a more than decent sound. All this with an autonomy that stands out above the rest of the characteristics.

However, we cannot get away from the reality that the Tab A still has the hardware of a fairly normal mid-range, and although its manufacture and finishes may suggest otherwise, this is a device for casual users.

This can fit very well with the demands that we could have towards a family tablet, where parents use it to browse and watch Netflix, and children to play and use educational apps. Let us bear in mind that the multi-user mode allows to differentiate the sessions and filter the accessibility of the different members of the family, something that helps to promote this type of shared use.

Evaluating all these aspects, are we facing a great tablet? Sure, but the price is quite high for what it has to offer. We have several Chinese tablets today that offer us almost double for much less, and even the Samsung Galaxy Tab A from 2016, which can be presented as a better alternative due to its much more moderate price.

In any case, a highly recommended quality Android device as long as we find it at a good price.
